It is said that the Minotaur was a ferocious beast with the body of a man and the head of a bull. Over time, we have discovered that many stories and figures once thought to be purely mythical were based on factual pasts or historically accurate figures. This realization was evident when the labyrinth of Crete was unearthed, the legendary home of the Minotaur.
So what if the Minotaur, too, was based on reality? What if he was just a man whose ferocity led to legends that transformed our memory of him into a bull-headed monster?
Humanity’s tendency to mythologize does not only apply to the past, and we are too quick to ignore each other’s humanity and label each other as unthinking monsters. When looking into the eyes of this sculpture, I invite the observer to see not only the man’s aggression but also his fear. I hope this sculpture serves as a reminder that some monsters are figments of our imagination, and to always search for the human being beneath the myth of the monster.
